Rangers win second straight City Championship
Rangers defend their 2012 title with a sweep
The Rangers became the first team since 2008 to defend their City Championship, thanks to their second consecutive Finals sweep of the Penetrators.
The blue and white capped off a successful season where they held on to first place all season long. Despite being taken the distance (three games)
by the Young Guns in Round One, four straight playoff wins and the Cup was theirs.
Brennan Sparks was the MVP of the playoffs for scoring three goals and five points in five games, despite playing on a spained ankle.
Jesse Stahn scored his second straight Championship cliniching goal, as the Rangers won Game 2 by a score of 1-0.
The Penetrators path to the finals included a second place finish in the regular season, and a two game sweep of their rivals the Wolfpack.
This year marked the 10th straight Finals appearance for the Pens, since joining the league in 2003, they have captured five championships.
City Finals Recap
Men's City Champions Series starts Monday March 11
#1 Seed Rangers look to defend title against #2 Seed Penetrators in 2012 Finals rematch
In 2012 the Rangers captured their first Men's City Championship with a two game sweep over the then top ranked Penetrators. Both games went to overtime, with Jesse Stahn scoring the championship winner.
Despite the loss, Paul Gach ran away with the playoff MVP award scoring 14 points in just four games.
Each team took a different path to the rematch. The Pens managed to finish in second place, while the Rangers were a first place team all season. In the playoffs, the Pens swept their rivals the Wolfpack with a 1-0 and 2-1 overtime win.
The defending Champions lost a hard fought 1-0 overtime loss in Game 1 to the Young Guns, before rattling off 2-1 and 3-1 wins to earn the chance to defend their title.
Although this series is a rematch from last season, this will also be the third time in the last five seasons these teams have battled for the title. Both teams have won once (Pens 2009) and (Rangers 2012).
The Penetrators have advanced to the Finals for the 10th straight year. Since joining the league in 2003, the Pens have won four championships.
